The Barbican Centre’s vision is world-class arts and learning. We partner with leading artists and organisations in the UK and around the world practising in music, theatre and dance, visual arts, architecture, design, film and fashion. Our Creative Learning programme engages people of all ages and abilities across the arts. Over 1.7 million people pass through the Barbican’s doors every year, and a further 300,000 attend off-site events each year.

The organisation’s strategic objectives are to collaborate with partners to:

  • Serve all our audiences
  • Produce an outstanding arts programme
  • Place creative learning at the heart of our work
  • Develop our iconic buildings
  • Diversify our funding
  • Create a cultural quarter in the City of London

The Barbican’s Grade II listed, architecturally renowned centre opened in 1982. The Centre comprises the Barbican Hall, the Barbican Theatre, the Pit studio theatre, Cinema One, Two and Three, the Barbican Art Gallery, The Curve gallery, foyers and public spaces, a library, Lakeside Terrace, a glasshouse conservatory, conference facilities and three restaurants. The City of London Corporation is the owner, founder and principal funder of the Barbican Centre.

The Barbican’s Development team

The Development department is responsible for securing revenue and capital income from a variety of sources, including philanthropic donations, grants, sponsorship and corporate memberships. The team works closely with internal teams, partner organisations, the Barbican Centre Board and Barbican Centre Trust to maximise income and support the Centre’s world-class arts and learning programme. This includes work at the Centre, in off-site venues across London, and international touring exhibitions.

You will be joining a growing, successful Development department who last year raised £1million pounds from individuals, trusts and foundations, cultural organisations and the business community. As the Dare Fundraising Academy fellow, you will have the opportunity to work with the Development team to gain hands-on experience in all areas of fundraising with a focus on philanthropy. You will work closely with the individual giving and trust and foundations teams to build upon success to date and develop new income generating programmes.
