New Writing North is the development agency for creative writing and reading in the north of England. NWN has been funded by Arts Council England since 1996 and is currently a National Portfolio Organisation. From a base in Newcastle upon Tyne the charity operates across the north of England producing flagship projects such as The Northern Writers’ Awards, The Gordon Burn Prize, Read Regional and Durham Book Festival.
NWN specialises in developing and investing in writers of all ages and acting as a dynamic broker between writers and producers across the creative industries. NWN also works in partnership with Higher Education to contribute to creative writing teaching and as a research partner. Our partners include BBC Radio 3, Channel 4 Drama, Faber and Faber, Northumbria University and Durham University. Our entrepreneurial approach to talent development has also seen NWN establish, Moth Publishing a crime imprint in partnership with Business Educational Publishers and work with Northumbria University to create the innovative Crime Story festival and events.
Fundraising in our small team is undertaken by all of the senior management team and all staff participate in this area of work. Over the next year we’re looking to develop new sponsors, raise significant income from trusts and foundations, explore new academic funding and expand our crowd-funding and individual giving campaigns.
