Led by the University of Leeds in partnership with Arts Fundraising & Philanthropy, the Post Graduate Certificate in Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy is aimed at arts managers giving them a breadth of insight, ideas and skills in how to lead arts fundraising in challenging economic times.

Designed and developed in collaboration with the University’s Business School and the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, this Postgraduate Certificate will provide a platform for graduates wishing to develop their careers in Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy and/or progress onto Masters study in the broader fields of Arts Management and Cultural Leadership.
The programme comprises an intensive executive Summer School and a sustained period of professional practice in an arts organisation, which is supported by the University via webinars and individual tutorials and supervision. The programme provides an academic and theoretical framework for the participants’ practice-based learning, giving them an opportunity to reflect on and contextualise their professional practice.
It provides access to the latest research and insights into Arts Fundraising, Arts Management and Cultural Leadership and to some senior leaders from the University of Leeds’ established cultural partners such as Opera North, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Tetley, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Dance. It aims to position the University of Leeds as a leading provider of academic provision in the emerging field of Arts Fundraising and to consolidate its established international reputation in Arts Management and Cultural Policy.
The award will be achieved by successful completion of two 30-credit modules:
- Module 1: successful completion of the National Summer School for Arts Fundraising and Leadership. The Summer School offers an intensive programme of study for emerging cultural entrepreneurs and will be led by renowned academics and arts sector professionals. Assessment will comprise an individual essay and group project work & presentations during the Summer School.
- Module 2: a work-based reflective professional practice module delivered at distance but supported by online resources, webinars and a research supervisor based at the University of Leeds. Assessment is by a 6,000 word synthesis of a reflective log.
During the course, students will:
- Develop a critical understanding of the emerging field of Arts Fundraising and Leadership using a range of contemporary theoretical and cultural policy frameworks;
- Understand and critique related theoretical concepts such as Arts Management, Arts Marketing, Cultural Leadership, Cultural Entrepreneurship and Change Management, and apply them to the field of Arts Fundraising and Leadership;
- Undertake a sustained period of professional practice in the field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy, and achieve a series of pre-determined business and professional developmental outcomes, including evidence of successfully planning, implementing, analysing, reporting on and evaluating fundraising activities;
- Engage in a sophisticated level of reflective practice, which illuminates and theorizes both everyday and strategic challenges of professional activity in the field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy, including the need to develop excellent leadership and inter-personal skills;
- Critically investigate contemporary Business and Arts Management theory and models and explore the challenges of applying this to the strategic development of 21st Century arts organisations;
- Identify and explore the challenges unique to leading contemporary arts organisations and the artistic, social, business and policy drivers which contextualise their mission development and delivery.
